Abstract
Tuned mass damper (TMD) have been studied and installed in structures extensively to protect the structures against lateral loads. Multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) which include a number of TMDs with different parameters have been proposed for improving the performance of single TMDs. When the structural system is considered as multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) and implemented with MTMDs, there is no effective closed-form solution to determine the optimal parameters of MTMDs. On the other hand designing optimal MTMDs include a large number of variables. For optimal design of MTMDs, in this research an effective method has been proposed in which the parameters of TMDs are determined based on minimizing the Hankel’s norm of structure. Since the optimization procedure includes a large number of variables, hence it has been decided to use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) for determining the variables. For numerical simulation, the method has been utilized on an eight-storey shear frame modeled as MDOF, and optimal MTMDs have been designed. The results show that using the Hankel’s norm of structure as objective function has led to design effective MTMDs which could be effective in reducing the response of structure, especially the average value, under different far-field and near-field earthquakes. Also it has been found that the method is effective regarding its simplicity and convergence in solving complex optimization problem. Through extensive numerical analysis the effect of MTMDs mass ratio and TMDs number in MTMDs has been studied.

Abstract
In this research, optimal design and assessment of multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) capability in mitigating the damage of nonlinear steel structures subjected to earthquake excitation has been studied. Optimal parameters of TMDs on nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures have been determined based on minimizing the maximum relative displacement (drift) of structure where for solving the optimization problem the genetic algorithm (GA) has been used successfully. For numerical analysis, three and nine storey 2-D moment resisting nonlinear steel frames subjected to far-field and near-field earthquakes and optimal MTMDs has been designed for different values of mass ratio and TMDs number. According to the results of numerical simulations, it can be said that MTMDs mechanism could reduce the damage of nonlinear steel structures where the effectiveness increases by increasing TMDs mass ratio. Also the performance of MTMDs depends on earthquake characteristics, mass ratio and TMDs configuration where in this research the effective case has been locating TMDs on top floor in parallel configuration.

Abstract
In the area of semi-active control of civil structures, Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper has been an efficient mechanism for reducing the seismic response of structures. In this paper, an effective method based on defining an optimization problem for designing MR dampers has been proposed. In the proposed method, the parameters of semi-active control system are determined so that the maximum response of structure is minimized. To solve the optimization problem, the Genetic algorithm (GA) has been utilized. The modified Bouc-Wen model has been used to represent the dynamic behavior of MR damper while to determine the input voltage at any time step, the clipped optimal control algorithm with LQR controller has been applied. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a ten-storey shear frame subjected to the El-Centro excitation and for two different kinds of objective functions, optimal MR dampers have been designed. Then the performance of optimal MR damper has been tested under different excitations. The results of the numerical simulations have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method in designing optimal MR dampers that have the capability of reducing the response of the structures up to a significant level. In addition, the effect of selecting a proper objective function to achieve the best performance of MR dampers in decreasing different responses of structure has been shown.

Abstract
In this paper, optimal design of hybrid low damping base isolation and magnetorheological (MR) damper has been studied. Optimal hybrid base isolation system has been designed to minimize the maximum base drift of low damping base isolation system where for solving the optimization problem, genetic algorithm (GA) has been used. In design procedure the maximum acceleration of the structure has been limited, too. To determine the volatge of semi-active MR damper the H2/LQG and clipped-optimal control algorithm has been applied. For numerical simulations, a three-story frame equipped with the hybrid base
isolation and MR damper subjected to the scaled El Centro excitation and optimal hybrid system has been designed. Results of numerical simulations have proven the effectiveness of the optimal hybrid control system in controlling the maximum base drift of isolated structure. Also comparing the performance of hybrid, low and high damping base isolation systems has shown that adding MR damper to low damping base isolation system has improved its performance so that the hybrid system has worked better th an high damping base isolation in reducing the maximum base drift. Testing optimal hybrid control system under different excitations has shown its efficiency.

Abstract
Semi-active base isolation system has been proposed mainly to mitigate the base drift of isolated structures while in most cases, its application causes the maximum acceleration of superstructure to be increased. In this paper, designing optimal semi-active base isolation system composed of linear base isolation system with low damping and magneto-rheological (MR) damper has been studied for controlling superstructure acceleration and base drift separately and simultaneously. A multi-objective optimization problem has been defined for optimal design of semi-active base isolation system which considers a linear combination of maximum acceleration and base drift as objective function where Genetic algorithm (GA) has been used to solve the optimization problem. H2/Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and clipped-optimal control algorithms have been used to determine the desired control force and the voltage of MR damper in each time step. For numerical simulation, a four-story base isolated shear frame has been considered and for different values of weighting parameter in objective function, optimal semi-active base isolation system has been designed under various design earthquakes. The results show that by using base isolation system and supplemental MR damper, the superstructure acceleration and base drift can be suppressed significantly. Also, it has been concluded that by selecting proper values for maximum acceleration and base drift related weighting parameters in objective function, it is possible to mitigate the maximum acceleration and base drift simultaneously. Furthermore, semi-active control system has worked successfully under testing earthquakes regarding design criteria.

Abstract
The main focus of this research has been to investigate the effectiveness of optimal single and multiple Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) under different ground motions as well as to develop a procedure for designing TMD and MTMDs to be effective under multiple records. To determine the parameters of TMD and MTMDs under multiple records various scenarios have been suggested and their efficiency has been assessed. For numerical simulations, a ten-story linear shear building frame subjected to 12 real earthquakes as well as a filtered white noise record and optimum parameters of TMDs and MTMDs have been determined by solving an optimization problem using genetic algorithm (GA). The results show that when designing optimal TMD and MTMD under a specific ground motion, using the optimization procedure leads to achieve the best performance while the characteristics of the design earthquake strongly affects the performance of TMDs. Furthermore, it has been found that TMDs and MTMDs designed using only one earthquake as the design record have not worked successfully under multiple ground motions. For determining the parameters of TMDs to be effective under multiple records it has been suggested to use the mean of optimal TMDs parameters obtained using each of the design records.

Abstract
Hybrid control system composed of a base isolation system and a magneto-rheological damper so-called smart base isolation is one of effective semi-active control system in controlling the seismic response of structures. In this paper, a design method is proposed for designing the smart base isolation system in order to achieve an effective performance under multiple earthquakes. The base mass, the base stiffness and the weighting parameter of H2/linear quadratic Gaussian control algorithm, which is used to determine the desired control force, have been considered as the design variables and different earthquake records have been considered as design earthquakes. First, the optimum values of these variables under each of the considered earthquakes have been determined by using the genetic algorithm and then, an optimum control system has been designed with multiple earthquakes-based design approach. The defined design objective is minimizing the peak base drift while the peak inter-story drift has been constrained. For numerical simulation, smart base isolation system is designed for controlling a four-story shear frame. The results show that when the control system designed for a specific earthquake is subjected to another earthquake, difference between the performance of this control system and the optimal case under that earthquake is considerable. Hence, the specific earthquake-based design approach is an inappropriate design procedure for smart base isolation. Also, it has been found that control system designed based on multiple earthquakes-based design approach shows effective performance in controlling the response of structure under a wide range of earthquakes.

Abstract
In this paper, a procedure has been presented to develop fragility curves of structures equipped with optimal variable damping or stiffness semi-active tuned mass dampers (SATMDs). To determine proper variable damping or stiffness of semi-active devices in each time step, instantaneous optimal control algorithm with clipped control concept has been used. Optimal SATMDs have been designed based on minimization of maximum inter-story drift of nonlinear structure which genetic algorithm(GA) has been used to solve the optimization problem. For numerical analysis, a nonlinear eight-story shear building with bilinear hysteresis material behavior has been used. Fragility curves for the structure equipped with optimal variable damping and stiffness SATMDs have been developed for different performance levels and compared with that of uncontrolled structure as well as structure controlled using passive TMD. Numerical analysis has shown that for most range of intensity measure optimal SATMDs have been effective in enhancement of the seismic fragility of the nonlinear structures which the improvement has been more than passive TMDs. Also, it has been found that, although variable stiffness SATMD shows to be more reliable in lower mass ratios, however in higher mass ratios variable stiffness and damping SATMDs performs similarly to improve reliability of the structure.

Abstract
In this paper, a design method is proposed for base isolation system under blast loading that this method is based on transforming design problem into an optimization problem. Genetic algorithm has been employed to solve the optimization problem whereas base isolation system properties have been considered as design variables and a linear combination of base drift and inter-story drift has been defined as objective function. A sensitivity analysis has been also conducted to investigate the effect of base isolation system properties on the blast performance of isolated structure. For numerical simulation, base isolation system is designed using the proposed method for controlling the response of an eight-story nonlinear shear-type building frame under blast loading. It has been found from the results that base isolation system is an effective control system under blast loading that its performance is dependent on the base isolation system characteristics especially the base mass. The optimization results also show that base isolation system designed using the proposed method is a well-designed control system for mitigating the blast response of structure and the proposed design method can be considered as an effective design approach under blast loading.

Abstract
In this paper, a procedure has been introduced to the multi-objective optimal design of semi-active tuned mass dampers (SATMDs) with variable stiffness for nonlinear structures considering soil-structure interaction under multiple earthquakes. Three bi-objective optimization problems have been defined by considering the mean of maximum inter-story drift as safety criterion of structural components, absolute acceleration as the criterion of occupants’ convenience, and safety of non-structural acceleration sensitive components, as well as SATMD relative displacement as the cost criterion of the control device. The parameters of the weighting matrices of the instantaneous optimal control algorithm and the maximum and minimum level of variable stiffness of the semi-active device have been considered as design variables. An improved version of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), has been employed to solve the optimization problems and figure out the set of Pareto optimal solutions. SATMDs with different mass ratios have been designed for an eight-story shear type building with bilinear elasto-plastic stiffness model where the soil-structure interaction has been incorporated by Cone model with three degrees of freedom for the soil. Results show the capability and simplicity of the proposed procedure to design SATMDs considering multiple performance criteria. It is observed that this procedure can offer a wide range of optimal solutions throughout the Pareto front which can be chosen by the designer based on desired performance and application of the structure.

Abstract
Reducing waste material plays an essential role for engineers in the current world. Nowadays, recycled materials are going to be used in order to manufacture concrete beams. Previous studies concluded that the currently proposed formulas to predict the flexural and shear behavior of the reinforced concrete beams were not appropriate for those manufactured by recycled materials. This study aims to employ the Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm to suggest the flexural and shear performance of recycled material reinforced concrete beams. For this purpose, the previous experimental outcomes are utilized, and new equations are established to anticipate both flexural and shear behavior of the recycled material concrete beams. Consequently, all findings are compared with those achieved experimentally. The attained significances of this study show that the proposed formulas have high accuracy for the experimental data.

Abstract
The semi-active bracing system locks or unlocks the stand-by braces in an on-off mode utilizing a variable stiffness device (VSD). In this paper, the optimal design of a semi-active bracing mechanism and evaluating its performance in mitigating structural vibration under seismic loading have been studied. The optimal stiffness values of the semi-active braces have been determined by solving two optimization problems including minimizing the maximum acceleration and also minimizing the maximum inter-story drift by imposing a constraint on the maximum acceleration. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been applied to solve the optimization problems. To illustrate the design procedure, an eight-story linear shear frame under earthquake record has been considered and the optimal semi-active braces have been designed. In addition, to assess the performance of optimal bracing system under other records which are different from design record in terms of intensity and frequency content, the structure equipped with optimally designed semi-active braces has been tested under several ground motion records. The results show that the optimal semi-active bracing system has simultaneously reduced different responses of the structure although the acceleration reduction has mainly been less compared to the drift reduction.
