Abstract

Vibrating particles system (VPS) is a swarm intelligence-based optimizer inspired by free vibration with a single degree of freedom systems. VPS is one of the well-known algorithms in structural optimization problems. However, its performance can be improved to find a better solution. This study introduces an improved version of the VPS using the statistical regeneration mechanism for the optimal design of the structures with discrete variables. The improved version is named VPS-SRM, and its efficiency is tested in the three real-size optimization problems. The optimization results reveal the capability and robustness of the VPS-SRM for the optimal design of the structures with discrete sizing variables.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in the development and deployment of control methods that use different components of the building to mitigate the seismic response of the structure. Meanwhile, the building facade, as a non-structural component, can be a suitable alternative in affecting the structure's behavior because of its role as an envelope of the building with a significant weight. Among the modular cladding systems, the Double Skin Facade (DSF) can be considered a passive system due to the distance of the exterior layer from the main structure and sufficient continuity and rigidity.  In this study, DSF systems are used as Peripheral Mass Dampers (PMDs) that control structural movements by dissipating energy during strong motions. The PMD system provides a building with several inherent dampers without the need for extra mass. To show the reliability and efficiency of the proposed approach, the PMD model is investigated and compared with results available in uncontrolled and Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) models. The PMD model is examined in three structural frames with 10, 20, and 30 stories with the extreme Mass Ratios (MRs) of 5% to 20%. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is performed on damper parameters of PMD and TMD systems to minimize structural responses. The results demonstrate that an optimal PMD system with multiple inherent mass dampers outperforms a single TMD system.

Abstract

The semi-active bracing system locks or unlocks the stand-by braces in an on-off mode utilizing a variable stiffness device (VSD). In this paper, the optimal design of a semi-active bracing mechanism and evaluating its performance in mitigating structural vibration under seismic loading have been studied. The optimal stiffness values of the semi-active braces have been determined by solving two optimization problems including minimizing the maximum acceleration and also minimizing the maximum inter-story drift by imposing a constraint on the maximum acceleration. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been applied to solve the optimization problems. To illustrate the design procedure, an eight-story linear shear frame under earthquake record has been considered and the optimal semi-active braces have been designed. In addition, to assess the performance of optimal bracing system under other records which are different from design record in terms of intensity and frequency content, the structure equipped with optimally designed semi-active braces has been tested under several ground motion records. The results show that the optimal semi-active bracing system has simultaneously reduced different responses of the structure although the acceleration reduction has mainly been less compared to the drift reduction.

Abstract

In this paper, three recently improved metaheuristic algorithms are utilized for the optimum design of the frame structures using the force method. These algorithms include enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO), improved shuffled Jaya algorithm (IS-Jaya), and Vibrating particles system - statistical regeneration mechanism algorithm (VPS-SRM). The structures considered in this study have a lower degree of statical indeterminacy (DSI) than their degree of kinematical indeterminacy (DKI). Therefore, the force method is the most suitable analysis method for these structures. The robustness and performance of these methods are evaluated by the three design examples named 1-bay 10-story steel frame, 3-bay 15-story steel frame, and 3-bay 24-story steel frame.

Abstract

Cement, water, fine aggregates, and coarse aggregates are combined to produce concrete, which is the most common substance after water and has a distinctly compressive strength, the most important quality indicator. Hardened concrete's compressive strength is one of its most important properties. The compressive strength of concrete allows us to determine a wide range of concrete properties based on this characteristic, including tensile strength, shear strength, specific weight, durability, erosion resistance, sulfate resistance, and others. Increasing concrete's compressive strength solely by modifying aggregate characteristics and without affecting water and cement content is a challenge in the direction of concrete production. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used to reduce laboratory work and predict concrete's compressive strength. Metaheuristic algorithms can be applied to ANN in an efficient and targeted manner, since they are intelligent systems capable of solving a wide range of problems. This study proposes new samples using the Taguchi method and tests them in the laboratory. Following the training of an ANN with the obtained results, the highest compressive strength is calculated using the EVPS and SA-EVPS algorithms.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to optimize reinforced concrete (RC) frames in the framework of performance-based design using metaheuristics. Three improved and efficient metaheuristics are employed in this work, namely, improved multi-verse (IMV), improved black hole (IBH) and modified newton metaheuristic algorithm (MNMA). These metaheuristic algorithms are applied for performance-based design optimization of 6- and 12-story planar RC frames. The seismic response of the structures is evaluated using pushover analysis during the optimization process. The obtained results show that the IBH outperforms the other algorithms.

Abstract

This paper deals with the optimum design of the mixed structures that consists of two parts, a lower part made of concrete and an upper part made of steel. Current codes and available commercial software packages do not provide analytical solutions for such structural systems, especially if a decoupled analysis is performed where the lower part is excited by ground motion and its response of total accelerations is used for the upper part. Due to irregular damping ratios, mass and stiffness, dynamic response of each part of a mixed structure differs significantly. The present paper aims at comparing of the optimum design of these structures under the coupled and decoupled models. Toward that goal, the coupled and decoupled time history analyses are performed and the optimum design of the two methods are compared. The results of the two approach show that the cost of the decoupled analysis is higher than the cost of the coupled analysis and the design of the decoupled method may be uneconomical, because the interaction between the two upper and lower parts is neglected.

Abstract

Improving the quality of open spaces and human comfort is necessary for more human-inaccessible spaces. Therefore, bus stations as open spaces for traveling thousands of people continuously are considered essential in absorbing sun rays and providing comfort. This paper investigates the performance of BRT stations in Tehran province in the summer, considering the highest shading. The second stage proposes a new graphic cable-stayed roof to compare the sun's path and shade. Ten stations of Moein-Tajrish terminals with South-North orientation were selected in this regard. Then, all the station details were calculated and analyzed in the Grasshopper Modeling Software. And the shadow and sunlight were evaluated and analyzed during the summer months between 12 am to 2 pm at noon. In order to evaluate the compatibility of the selected samples, three variables, including orientation, the height of the awning, and the slope of the awning, were considered orientation of 5, the height of 1, and the gradient of 19 introduced as the most optimal model. Also, studies and analyses were carried out in Honey Bee & Ladybug plugins, including Qualitative Analysis, Hourly Quantitative Analysis, and Energy Quantitative Analysis. The results showed that the selected case sample is more than 55% in the desired shading. The second stage proposes a new graphic cable-stayed roof to compare the sun's path and shade for the structure.

Abstract

Shape optimization of a double-curved dam is formulated using control points for interpolation functions. Every design vector is decoded into the integrated water-dam-foundation rock model. An enhanced algorithm is proposed by hybridizing particle swarm algorithm with ant colony optimization and simulated annealing. The best experiences of the search agents are indirectly shared via pheromone trail deposited on a bi-partite characteristic graph. Such a stochastic search is further tuned by Boltzmann functions in simulated annealing. The proposed method earned the first rank in comparison with six well-known meta‑heuristic algorithms in solving benchmark test functions. It captured the optimal shape design of Morrow Point dam, as a widely addressed case-study, by 21% reduced concrete volume with respect to the common USBR design practice and 16% better than the particle swarm optimizer. Such an optimal design was also superior to the others in stress redistribution for better performance of the dam system.

Abstract

In this paper an enhanced ant colony optimization algorithm with a direct constraints handling strategy is proposed for the optimization of reinforced concrete frames. The construction cost of reinforced concrete frames is considered as the objective function, which should be minimized subject to geometrical and behavioral strength constraints. For this purpose, a new probabilistic function is added to the ant colony optimization algorithm to directly satisfy the geometrical constraints. Furthermore, the position of an ant in each iteration is updated if a better solution is found in terms of objective value and behavioral strength constraints satisfaction. Five benchmark design examples of planar reinforced concrete frames are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract

In this study, experimental and computational approaches are used in order to develop and optimize self-compacting concrete mixes (Artificial neural network, EVPS metaheuristic algorithm, Taguchi method). Initially, ten basic mix designs were tested, and an artificial neural network was trained to predict the properties of these mixes. The network was then used to generate ten optimized mixes using the EVPS algorithm. Three mixes with the highest compressive strength were selected, and additional tests were conducted using the Taguchi approach. Inputting these results, along with the initial mix designs, into a second trained neural network, 10 new mix designs were tested using the network. Two of these mixes did not meet the requirements for self-compacting concrete, specifically in the U-box test. However, the predicted compressive strength results showed excellent agreement with low error percentages compared to the laboratory results, which indicates the effectiveness of the artificial neural network in predicting concrete properties, thus indicating that self-compacting concrete properties can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. The paper emphasizes the reliability and cost-effectiveness of artificial neural networks in predicting concrete properties. The study highlights the importance of providing diverse and abundant training data to improve the accuracy of predictions. The results demonstrate that neural networks can serve as valuable tools for predicting concrete characteristics, saving time and resources in the process. Overall, the research provides insights into the development of self-compacting concrete mixes and highlights the effectiveness of computational approaches in optimizing concrete performance.

Abstract

This paper presents the chaotic variants of the particle swarm optimization-statistical regeneration mechanism (PSO-SRM). The nine chaotic maps named Chebyshev, Circle, Iterative, Logistic, Piecewise, Sine, Singer, Sinusoidal, and Tent are used to increase the performance of the PSO-SRM. These maps are utilized instead of the random number, which defines the solution generation method. The robustness and performance of these methods are tested in the three steel frame design problems, including the 1-bay 10-story steel frame, 3-bay 15-story steel frame, and 3-bay 24-story steel frame. The optimization results reveal that the applied chaotic maps improve the performance of the PSO-SRM.

Abstract

Predicting the bearing capability (qrs) of geogrid-reinforced stone columns poses a significant challenge due to variations in soil and rock parameters across different locations. The behavior of soil and rock in one region cannot be generalized to other regions. Therefore, accurately predicting qrs requires a complex and stable nonlinear equation that accounts for the complexity of rock engineering problems. This paper utilizes the Rock Engineering System (RES) method to address this issue and construct a predictive model.To develop the model, experimental data consisting of 219 data points from various locations were utilized. The input parameters considered in the model included the ratio between geogrid reinforced layers diameter and footing diameter (d/D), the ratio of stone column length to diameter (L/dsc), the qrs of unreinforced soft clay (qu), the thickness ratio of Geosynthetic Reinforced Stone Column (GRSB) and USB to base diameter (t/D), and the settlement ratio to footing diameter (s/D). Following the implementation of the RES-based method, a comparison was made with other models, namely linear, power, exponential, polynomial, and multiple logarithmic regression methods. Statistical indicators such as root mean square error (RMSE), mean square error (MSE), and coefficient of determination (R2) were employed to assess the accuracy of the models. The results of this study demonstrated that the RES-based method outperforms other regression methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract

The balanced vehicle routing problem (BVRP) is one of the most famous research problems in operations, which has a very important position in combination optimization problems. In this problem, a fleet of vehicles with capacity Q starts moving from a node called the warehouse and returns to it after serving customers, provided that they visit each customer only once and never exceed the capacity Q. The goal is to minimize the paths traveled by vehicles provided that the distances traveled by the vehicles are the same as possible, for more justice in working time and income. This article presents the application of a hybrid imperialist competitive algorithm (HICA) to solve the problem. Unlike other optimization methods, this method is inspired by the socio-political process of societies and uses the competition between colonizing and colonized countries to reach the solution. To test the effectiveness of the algorithm, a set of standard examples are considered and the algorithm is implemented on it. The calculation results on these examples, which have a size of 50 to 200, show that the proposed algorithm has been able to compete well with well-known meta-heuristic algorithms in terms of the quality of the answers. In addition, the solutions close to the best answers obtained so far are generated for most of the examples.

Abstract

Structural topology optimization provides an insight into efficient designing as it seeks optimal distribution of material to minimize the total cost and weight of the structures. This paper presents an optimum design of steel moment frames and connections of structures subjected to serviceability and strength constraints in accordance with AISC-Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). In connection topology optimizations, different beam and column sections and connections and also to optimize two steel moment frames a genetic algorithm was used and their performance was compared. Initially, two common steel moment frames were studied, only for the purpose of minimizing the weight of the structure and the members of structure are considered as design variables. Since the cost of a steel moment frame is not solely related to the weight of the structure, in order to obtain a realistic plan, in the second part of this study, for the other two frames the cost of the connections is also added to the variables. The results indicate that the steel frame optimization by applying real genetic algorithm could be optimal for structural designing. The findings highlighted the prominent performance and lower costs of the steel moment frames when different connections are used.

Abstract

The primary objective of this paper is to propose a novel technique for hybridizing various metaheuristic algorithms to optimize the size of discrete structures. To accomplish this goal, two well-known metaheuristic algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO) are hybridized to propose a new algorithm called hybrid PSO-ECBO (HPE) algorithm. The performance of the new HPE algorithm is investigated in solving the challenging structural optimization problems of discrete steel trusses and an improvement in results has been achieved. The numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed HPE algorithm over the original versions of PSO, ECBO, and some other algorithms in the literature.

Abstract

In this study, the investigation of maximum inelastic displacement demands in steel moment- resisting (SMR) frames designed using the Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD) method is conducted under both near-fault and far-fault earthquake records. The PBPD method utilizes a target drift and predetermined yield mechanism as the functional limit state. To accomplish this, 6 steel moment frames having various heights were scaled using well-known sa(T1)  method and, then, were analyzed by OPENSEES software. A total of 22 far-fault records and 90 near-fault records were compiled and employed for parametric nonlinear dynamic analysis. The near-fault records were classified into two categories: T1/Tp≥1  and T1/Tp<1 . The study aimed at investigate their impacts on the inter-story drift and the relative distribution of base shear along the height of the structure. The results revealed that the records with T1/Tp≥1   exerted the greatest influence on the drift demands of upper stories in all frames. Conversely, the near-fault records with T1/Tp<1  demonstrated the most significant impact on the lower stories of mid-rise frames. Additionally, the distribution of relative story shears was examined through genetic programming for optimum PBPD design of steel moment frame structures. As a result, a proposed relationship, denoted as b (seismic parameter for design lateral force distribution), was developed and optimized for both near-fault and far-fault records. This relationship depends on the fundamental period of vibration and the total height of the structure. The accuracy of the predicted model was assessed using R2 , which confirmed the reliability of the proposed relationship.

Abstract

The analysis and design of high-rise structures is one of the challenges faced by researchers and engineers due to their nonlinear behavior and large displacements. The moment frame system is one of the resistant lateral load-bearing systems that are used to solve this problem and control the displacements in these structures. However, this type of structural system increases the construction costs of the project. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method that can optimize the weight of these structures. In this work, the weight of these significant structures is optimized by using one of the latest metaheuristic algorithms called special relativity search. The special relativity search algorithm is mainly developed for the optimization of continuous unconstrained problems. Therefore, a penalty function is used to prevent violence of the constraints of the problem, which are tension, displacement, and drift. Also, using an innovative technique to transform the discrete problem into a continuous one, the optimal design is carried out. To prove the applicability of the new method, three different problems are optimized, including an eight-story one-span, a fifteen-story three-span bending frame, and a twenty-four-story three-span moment frame. The weight of the structure is the objective function, which should be minimized to the lowest possible value without violating the constraints of the problem. The calculation of stress and displacements of the structure is done based on the regulations of AISC-LRFD requirements. To validate, the results of the proposed algorithm are compared with other advanced metaheuristic methods.

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to optimize the size and layout of planar truss structures simultaneously. To deal with this challenging type of truss optimization problem, the center of mass optimization (CMO) metaheuristic algorithm is utilized, and an extensive parametric study is conducted to find the best setting of internal parameters of the algorithm. The CMO metaheuristic is based on the physical concept of the center of mass in space. The effectiveness of the CMO metaheuristic is demonstrated through the presentation of three benchmark truss layout optimization problems. The numerical results indicate that the CMO is competitive with other metaheuristics and, in some cases, outperforms them.

Abstract

Genetic algorithm is a robust meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the theory of natural selection to solve various optimization problems. This study presents a method with the purpose of promoting the exploration and exploitation of genetic algorithm. Improvement in exploration ability is made by adjusting the initial population and adding a group of fixed stations. This modification increases the diversity among the solution population, which enables the algorithm to escape from local optimum and to converge to the global optimum even in fewer generations. On the other hand, to enhance the exploitation ability, increasing the number of selected parents is suggested and a corresponding crossover technique has been presented. In the proposed technique, the number of parents to generate offspring is variable during the process and it could be potentially more than two. The effectiveness of the modifications in the proposed method has been verified by examining several benchmark functions and engineering design problems.
