Abstract

The present study is concerned with the simultaneous optimization of the size of components and the arrangement of connections for performance-based seismic design of low-rise SPSWs. Design variables include the size of beams and columns, the thickness of the infill panels, the type of each beam-to-column connection and the type of each infill-to-boundary frame connection. The objective function is considered to be the sum of the material cost and rigid connection fabrication cost. For comparison purposes, the SPSW model is also optimized with regard to two fixed connection arrangements. To fulfill the optimization task a new hybrid optimization algorithm called CBO-Jaya is proposed. The performance of the proposed hybrid optimization algorithm is assessed by two benchmark optimization problems. The results of the application of the proposed algorithm to the benchmark problem indicate the efficiency, robustness, and the fast convergence of the proposed algorithm compared with other meta-heuristic algorithms. The achieved results for the SPSWs demonstrate that incorporating the optimal arrangement of beam-to-column and infill-to-boundary frame connections into the optimization procedure results in considerable reduction of the overall cost.

Abstract

Partricular features of overpassing local optima and providing near-optimal soultion in practical time has led researchers to apply metaheuristics in several engineering problems. Optimal design of diagrids as one of the most efficient structural systems in tall buildings has been concerned here. Jaya algorithm as a recent paramter-less optimization method is employed to solve the problem using a set of available sections. Furthermore, passive congregation is embedded in Jaya without adding any extra control parameters. Applyig the method in a number of real-size structural examples including diagrids, exhibits performance improvement by the new hybrid algorithm with respect to Jaya.

Abstract

In this paper, the improved shuffled-based Jaya algorithm (IS-Jaya) is applied to the size optimization of the braced dome with the frequency constraints. IS-Jaya is the enhanced version of the Jaya algorithm that the shuffling process and escaping from local optima are added for it. These two modifications increase the population diversity and ability the escape from the local optima of the Jaya. The robustness and performance of the IS-Jaya are evaluated by the three design examples. The results show that the IS-Jaya algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art optimization techniques considered in the literature.

Abstract

In this paper, three recently improved metaheuristic algorithms are utilized for the optimum design of the frame structures using the force method. These algorithms include enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO), improved shuffled Jaya algorithm (IS-Jaya), and Vibrating particles system - statistical regeneration mechanism algorithm (VPS-SRM). The structures considered in this study have a lower degree of statical indeterminacy (DSI) than their degree of kinematical indeterminacy (DKI). Therefore, the force method is the most suitable analysis method for these structures. The robustness and performance of these methods are evaluated by the three design examples named 1-bay 10-story steel frame, 3-bay 15-story steel frame, and 3-bay 24-story steel frame.
