Abstract

In this paper we present a unified (probabilistic/possibilistic) model for resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with uncertain activity durations and a concept of a heuristic approach connected to the theoretical model. It is shown that the uncertainty management can be built into any heuristic algorithm developed to solve RCPSP with deterministic activity durations. The essence and viability of our unified model are illustrated by fuzzy examples presented in the recent fuzzy RCPSP literature.

Abstract

Weighted Uniform Simulation (WUS) is recently presented as one of the efficient simulation methods to obtain structural failure probability and most probable point (MPP). This method requires initial assumptions of failure probability to obtain results. Besides, it has the problem of variation in results when it conducted with few samples. In the present study three strategies have been presented that efficiently enhanced capabilities of WUS. To this aim, a progressively expanding intervals strategy proposed to eliminate the requirement to initial assumptions in WUS, while low-discrepancy samples simultaneously employed to reduce variations in failure probabilities. Moreover, to improve the accuracy of MPP, a new simple local search method proposed and combined with the simulation that strengthened the method to obtain more accurate MPP. The capabilities of proposed strategies investigated by solving several structural reliability problems and obtained results compared with traditional WUS and common reliability methods. Results show that proposed strategies efficiently improved the capabilities of conventional WUS.

Abstract

In the present study, the reliability assessment of performance-based optimally seismic designed reinforced concrete (RC) and steel moment frames is investigated. In order to achieve this task, an efficient methodology is proposed by integrating Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and neural networks (NN). Two NN models including radial basis function (RBF) and back propagation (BP) models are examined in this study. In the proposed methodology, MCS is used to estimate the total exceedence probability associated with immediate occupancy (IO), life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP) performance levels. To reduce the computational burden of MCS process, the required nonlinear responses of the generated structures are predicted by RBF and BP models. The numerical results imply the superiority of BP to RBF in prediction of structural responses associated with performance levels. Finally, the obtained results demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed methodology for reliability assessment of RC and steel frame structures.

Abstract

Building performance simulation is being increasingly deployed beyond the building design phase to support efficient building operation. Specifically, the predictive feature of the simulation-assisted building systems control strategy provides distinct advantages in view of building systems with high latency and inertia. Such advantages can be exploited only if model predictions can be relied upon. Hence, it is important to calibrate simulation models based on monitored data. In the present paper, we report on the use of optimization-aided model calibration in the context of an existing university building. Thereby, our main objective is to deploy data obtained via the monitoring system to both populate the initial simulation model and to maintain its fidelity through an ongoing optimization-based calibration process. The results suggest that the calibration can significantly improve the predictive performance of the thermal simulation model.

Abstract

Measurement of discharge in open channels is one of the main concerns in hydraulic engineering. The structures used for this aim should be accurate, economical and easy to use. Weirs are among the oldest and most convenient hydraulic structures that have been used in both laboratory and field for flow measurement in open channels. Due to limitations of simple sharp crested weirs, recently compound sharp crested weirs have attracted great attention of civil engineers. In general, use of compound sharp crested weirs can be an appropriate solution when the discharge should be measure accurately with a reasonable sensitivity over a wide range of flows. The aim of this research is three-dimensional simulation of flow on contracted compound arched rectangular sharp crested weirs by using FLUENT software. For multiphase flow simulation, VOF method is used and for simulation of turbulent flow, RNG k-ɛ turbulence model is used and the result of numerical model is compared with experimental data. The results of this study indicate that FLUENT simulate flow on contracted compound arched rectangular sharp crested weirs with high accuracy and we can use this software for determine the discharge coefficient on contracted compound weirs.

Abstract

A Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) framework is presented that accounts for stochastic variations in structural parameters and operating conditions. The reliability index calculation is itself an iterative process, potentially employing an optimization technique to find the shortest distance from the origin to the limit-state boundary in a standard normal space. Monte Carlo simulation (MCs) is embedded into a design optimization procedure by a modular double loop approach, which the self-adaptive version of particle swarm optimization method is introduced as an optimization technique. Double loop method has the advantage of being simple in concepts and easy to implement. First, we study the efficiency of self-adaptive PSO algorithm inorder to solve the optimization problem in reliability analysis and then compare the results with the Monte Carlo simulation. While computationally significantly more expensive than deterministic design optimization, the examples illustrate the importance of accounting for uncertainties and the need for regarding reliability-based optimization methods and also, should encourage the use of PSO as the best of evolutionary optimization methods to more such reliability-based optimization problems.

Abstract

The paper deals with the reliability–based design optimization (RBDO) of concrete gravity dams subjected to earthquake load using subset simulation. The optimization problem is formulated such that the optimal shape of concrete gravity dam described by a number of variables is found by minimizing the total cost of concrete gravity dam for the given target reliability. In order to achieve this purpose, a framework is presented whereby subset simulation is integrated with a hybrid optimization method to solve the RBDO approach of concrete gravity dam. Subset simulation with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling is utilized to estimate accurately the failure probability of dams with a minimum number of samples. In this study, the concrete gravity dam is treated as a two–dimensional structure involving the material nonlinearity effects and dam–reservoir–foundation interaction. An efficient metamodel in conjunction with subset simulation–MCMC is provided to reduce the computational cost of dynamic analysis of dam–reservoir–foundation system. The results demonstrate that the RBDO approach is more appropriate than the deterministic optimum approach for the optimal shape design of concrete gravity dams.

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is a useful tool for computation of probability of failure in reliability analysis. However, the large number of samples, often required for acceptable accuracy, makes it time-consuming. Importance sampling is a method on the basis of MCS which has been proposed to reduce the computational time of MCS. In this paper, a new adaptive importance sampling-based algorithm applying the concepts of first-order reliability method (FORM) and using (1) a new simple technique to select an appropriate initial point as the location of design point, (2) a new criterion to update this design point in each iteration and (3) a new sampling density function, is proposed to reduce the number of deterministic analyses. Besides, although this algorithm works with the position of design point, it does not need any extra knowledge and updates this position based on previous generated results. Through illustrative examples, commonly used in the literature to test the performance of new algorithms, it will be shown that the proposed method needs fewer number of limit state function (LSF) evaluations.

Abstract

Today’s, a common problem in cities is increasing delay and reducing the speed of traffic. On the other wise increasing costs of acquisition in urban area are not allow new routes and highways. Also construction of new highway or street such as Imam Ali highway and Sadr highway in Tehran lead to develop new applications (such as BRT lane ,…) And become quickly saturate and less efficient. Therefore traffic Management could be more effective in controlling traffic with lower costs. Variable message sign is one of these management solutions. For this purpose, two parallel streets ENGHELAB and JOMHORI are selected to study. The result of this research show that implementation of this variable message sign when accident occur and abstraction the road and using strategy of change way can reduce 100 sec/km of delay time and reduce fuel consumption to 400 lit/hr that it means saving about 667 thousand dollar in fuel consumption and delay time.

Abstract

Growing tendency for Urbanization and rapid development of the cities has resulted in urban neighborhoods obstructing the access of each other to the natural sources e.g. solar energy, natural ventilation. Sunlight as the main part of input energy in urban energy balance equation and natural lighting is of vital importance. This paper attempts to achieve an optimum morphology for residential blocks in urban area with the highest exposure to the sunlight. To reach this goal a pilot area in Tabriz’s downtown was selected and regarding solar angle, local street regulations and the width of surrounding streets 3 different scenarios for the buildings blocks were defined. Using a three-dimensional microclimate model, ENVI-met, solar access of defined scenarios was calculated for the longest and the shortest day of the year. Results showed that Type C2 (highest, more open spaces) is a more efficient style for winter times as it receives more of the sun’s energy and also the amount of sun it gets during a day and type B2 (medium open space and height) is the better for summer as it gets less energy from the sun and it is exposed to sunlight less than other types in a hot summer day.

Abstract

One of the most important problems discussed recently in structural engineering is the structural reliability analysis considering uncertainties. To have an efficient optimization process for designing a safe structure, firstly it is required to study the effects of uncertainties on the seismic performance of structure and then incorporate these effects on the optimization process. In this study, a new procedure developed for incorporating two important sources of uncertainties in design optimization process of steel moment resisting frames, is proposed. The first source is related to the connection parameter uncertainties and the second one to seismic demand uncertainty. Additionally Mont Carlo (MC) simulation and a variance reduction technique (VRT) are utilized to deal with uncertainties and to reduce the corresponding computational cost. In the proposed procedure two design objectives are considered, which are structural weight and collapse prevention reliability index for a moment resisting frame in such a way that leads to a set of optimum designs with minimum weight and less possible amounts of sensitivity to connection parameters uncertainties and spectral acceleration uncertainty as seismic demand variation. Additionally, in this procedure the reliability index is computed considering all FEMA-356 performance acceptance criteria, the approach that has never been investigated in other studies. The efficiency of this approach is illustrated by exhibiting a set of optimum designs, in the form of both objective values and investigating nonlinear behavior of optimum designs compared with non-optimum designs. This procedure is introduced in this paper with emphasize on the collapse limit state and applying pushover analysis for studying the nonlinear behavior of structural elements.

Abstract

Passive systems are preferred tools for seismic control of buildings challenged by probabilistic nature of the input excitation. However, other types of uncertainty still exist in parameters of the control device even when optimally tuned. The present work concerns optimal design of multiple-tuned-mass-damper embedded on a shear building by a number of meta-heuristics. They include well-known genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization as well as more recent gray wolf optimizer and its hybrid method embedding swarm intelligence. The study is two-fold: first, optimal designs by different meta-heuristics are compared concerning their reduction in structural seismic responses; second, the effect of uncertainty in Multi-Tuned-Mass-Damper parameters, is studied offering new reliability-based curves. Monte Carlo Simulation is employed to evaluate failure probabilities. A variety of structural responses are assessed against seismic excitation including maximal displacement, velocity and acceleration. It is declared that the best algorithm for efficiency and effectiveness has not coincided the best based on the reliability traces. Such traces also show that in a specific range of limit-states, algorithm selection has a serious effect on the reliability results. It was found even more than 35% and depends on the response type.

Abstract

Nowadays, the optimal design of structures based on reliability has been converted to an active topic in structural engineering. The Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) methods provide the structural design with lower cost and more safety, simultaneously. In this study, the optimal design based on reliability of dome truss structures with probability constraint of the frequency limitation is discussed. To solve the RBDO problem, nested double-loop method is considered; one of the loops performs the optimization process and the other one assesses the reliability of the structure. The optimization process is implemented using ECBO and EVPS algorithms and the reliability index is calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. Finally, the size and shape reliability-based optimization of 52-bar and 120-bar dome trusses has been investigated.

Abstract

Economy and safety are two important components in structural design process and stablishing a balance between them indeed results in improved structural performance specially in large-scale structures including space lattice domes. Topology optimization of geometrically nonlinear single-layer lamella, network, and geodesic lattice domes is implemented using enhanced colliding-bodies optimization algorithm for three different spans and two different dead loading conditions. Collapse reliability index of these optimal designs is evaluated to assess the safety of the structures against overall collapse using Monte-Carlo simulation method. The numerical results of this study indicate that the reliability index of most of the optimally designed nonlinear lattice domes is low and this means that the safety of these structures against overall collapse is questionable.

Abstract

Reliable and accurate streamflow forecasting plays a crucial role in water resources systems (WRS) especially in dams operation and watershed management. However, due to the high uncertainty associated WRS components and nonlinear nature of streamflow generations, the realistic streamflow forecasts is still one of the most challenging issue in WRS. This paper aimed to forecast one-month ahead streamflow of Karun river (Iran) by coupling an artificial neural network (ANN) with an improved binary version of gravitational search algorithm (IBGSA), named ANN- IBGSA. To this end, the best lag number for each predictor at Poleshaloo station was firstly selected by auto-correlation function (ACF). The ANN-IBGSA was used to minimize the sum of RMSE and R2 and to identify the optimal predictors. Finally, to characterize the hydro-climatic uncertainties associated with the selected predictors, an
implicit approach of Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) was applied. The ACF plots indicated a significant correlation up to a lag of two months for the input predictors. The ANN-IBGSA identified the Tmean (t-1), Q(t-1) and Q(t) as the best predictors. Findings demonstrated that the ANN-IBGSA forecasts were considerably better than those previously carried out by researchers in 2013. The average improvement values were 9.91%, 11.85% and 9.13% for RMSE, R2 and MAE, respectively. The Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrated that all of forecasted values lie within the 95% confidence intervals.

Abstract

The wind loads considerably influence lightweight spatial structures. An example of spatial structures is scallop domes that contain various configurations and forms and the wind impact on a scallop dome is more complex due to its additional curvature. In our work, the wind pressure coefficient (Cp ) on the scallop dome surface is studied numerically and experimentally. Firstly, the programming language Formian-K is used for generating the scallop dome configuration. Then, the scallop dome scale model is designed using a CAD/CAM system, and it is constructed in fiberglass. Afterward, the wind tunnel of the atmospheric boundary layer is presented, and the scale model is applied for performing the tests so that the Cp  is obtained. The scallop dome scale model was taken into account in numerical investigation. For simulation of the turbulent flow, Large Eddy Simulation (LES), Reynolds Stress Turbulence Model (RSM), the k-ε RNG, and k-omega Shear Stress Transport (k-ω SST) approaches were used. Lastly, we compared the wind pressure coefficients obtained by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with the results of the experimental investigation. As indicated by the results, the LES method, particularly, RSM model, can be applied because of lower computational costs for the analysis of other scallop dome configurations for obtaining Cp .

Abstract

The main aim of this study, is to evaluate the seismic reliability of steel concentrically braced frame (SCBF) structures optimally designed in the context of performance-based design. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method and neural network (NN) techniques were utilized to conduct the reliability analysis of the optimally designed SCBFs. Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) trained by back propagation technique was used to evaluate the required structural responses and then the total exceedence probability associated with the seismic performance levels was estimated by the MCS method. Three numerical examples of 5-, 10-, and 15-story SCBFs with fixed and optimal topology of braces are presented and their probability of failure was evaluated considering the resistance characteristics and the seismic loading of the structures. The numerical results indicate that the SCBFs with optimal topology of braces were more reliable than those with fixed topology of braces.

Abstract

In this study, the support vector machine and Monte Carlo simulation are applied to predict natural frequencies of truss structures with uncertainties. Material and geometrical properties (e.g., elasticity modulus and cross-section area) of the structure are assumed to be random variables. Thus, the effects of multiple random variables on natural frequencies are investigated. Monte Carlo simulation is used for probabilistic eigenvalue analysis of the structure. In order to reduce the computational cost of Monte Carlo simulation, a support vector machine model is trained to predict the required natural frequencies of the structure computed in the simulations. The provided examples demonstrate the computational efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method compared to the direct Monte Carlo simulation in the computation of the natural frequencies for trusses with random parameters.
